ESPN To Air WSOP Europe

ESPN will air the second WSOP Europe, which starts in September, in the US and on the web:

For the first time... ESPN, the exclusive World Series of Poker telecaster, is scheduled to air eight original hours of coverage of the World Series of Poker Europe in the United States and distribute the tournament globally. ESPN360.com, ESPN’s signature broadband sports network, is scheduled to provide live coverage in the U.S., Europe, Mexico and Brazil.

Harrah’s Entertainment will distribute the World Series of Poker Europe programming in non-ESPN markets, which in 2007 totaled over 100 million households including U.K. host broadcaster Sky Sports.

The 2008 WSOPE has a new producer: Poker PROductions, which does Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker. The first WSOPE broadcast was one of the worst poker shows I've ever seen. Poker PROductions generally does better work than that however, but ESPN remains in charge, so it will be interesting to see if there's any improvement.

Episodes 1-4 are scheduled for 6-10 PM on Sunday, February 1. Yes, that's opposite the Super Bowl.

ESPN issued a WSOP Europe press release touting mobile hole card cameras, which will enable them them to show the hole cards of players that aren't at the two hole-card-cam-equipped tables. But what use is it seeing Phil Hellmuth's hole cards if you can't see his opponents' hole cards?

They're only presenting the Main Event.

A couple of notes about the broadcast:
- They'll show all the hole cards when it gets down to 10 players.
- We will be able to see opponents' hands when they're using the mobile hole card cameras.

ESPN released a preview, with some spoilers, of the first four episodes.
